What I Do: DE→EN Translations for the Art World

I’m a literary translator working from German into English, specialized in contemporary art and photography. I also translate on architecture and design.

I work mostly with museums, galleries, publishers, and artists based in Germany and Switzerland.

My translation projects span:

  • literary and critical writing on contemporary art and photography

  • original artist writings, including poetry, fiction, and other creative prose

  • interviews, profiles, and exhibition catalogue essays

  • wall texts, subtitles, and press materials

  • interviews with artists, artist profiles, and exhibition reviews

I work in both British English and American English. In addition, I proofread page proofs using Adobe tools and copyedit texts in Microsoft Word.

Who I Am: About Sylee Gore

Raised in the United States, I’ve been based in Berlin since 2001. I studied in California and England, completing a BA with honours in English and History of Science at Stanford University and a master’s degree with distinction at the University of Oxford.

Since 2014, I’ve worked as a literary translator and editor, collaborating with museums, artists, publishers, and cultural institutions on translation and editing projects.

Before founding Only Today in 2014, I taught for the British Council in Berlin and managed projects as an editor at Cornelsen Verlag. These experiences shaped my attention to linguistic detail and cross-cultural communication.

How I Work: What to Expect

As an independent translator and editor, I respond to every query personally, keeping communication straightforward. This lets me understand your exact needs and bear them in mind as I work.

My approach is literary as well as precise: I work holistically, balancing rhythm, register, diction, and tone while attending closely to meaning and context. I work with precision and attention to detail.

I value the collegial relationships I’ve built with my clients and take pride in warm, clear contact with all project partners. I can communicate in German or English, depending on your preference.
